The APVMA has proposed (in their recent preliminary review) removing the broad claims that allow the use of paraquat and diquat in "Row crops, Vegetables, and Market Gardens." This decision stems from the APVMA's identification of unacceptable environmental risks associated with the use of these chemicals, either individually or in combination, particularly concerning their impact on wild mammals and birds.
As a result, access to paraquat and paraquat/diquat formulations will be lost for all vegetables and row crops, including melons classified as cucurbits. However, for diquat, some vegetables and row crops (excluding cucurbits/melons) will still have access.
For more information on the proposal, please refer to the summary of assessment outcomes in the proposed regulatory decisions on the APVMA website.
We need your input and assistance!
Melons Australia is collaborating with other Peak Industry Bodies to assess the potential usage and impact on melon growers if this decision is implemented.
We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the following questions, please email to biosecurity@melonsaustralia.org.au
- Do you currently use paraquat and/or diquat, including in combination? (please specify what)
- If yes, for what purpose are you using it, what rates are you using, at whatstages of the crop cycle are you using it and what are your currentapplication methods?
- How would losing access to these chemicals affect your melon production and crop management? What are your alternatives, are they as affective and what is the cost implication? (Please be as specific as possible)
- Do you have any other details or comments that could help us prepare a response to this consultation process?
