Melons Australia's CEO Update

Last Thursday, we held our AGM, where we sadly bid farewell to Damien Odgers and Anthony Joseph after an incredible seven years serving on the Melons Australia board. Their outstanding contributions have helped steer our organisation in the right direction for the future. We’d like to express our sincere gratitude for their dedication. We also had a fantastic turnout at the AGM—thank you to all the members who attended!

The current Melons Australia board now includes: Paul McLaughlin (Chair), Terry O’Leary (Treasurer/Secretary), Matt Ryan, Shaun Jackson, Leith Plevey, Sam Clayfield, Luca D’Arsie and Doug Smith.

Also in September, we wrapped up our final Roadshow of the year in Bundaberg, and it was a resounding success! A big thank you to everyone involved, especially the Melons Australia team and Agreco (who hosted the event) for organising and delivering a great afternoon including field walk, presentations and refreshments.

We’re now in the process of reviewing the interim report for the ACCC’s supermarket inquiry and the responses by state and federal Governments to ensure they align with the future needs of our industry. For more information go to https://www.accc.gov.au/inquiries-and-consultations/supermarkets-inquiry-2024-25

Additionally, QFVG has released their annual data insights, and we’re seeking industry feedback. Please send any comments or responses directly to me via email.

Bundaberg Roadshow A Success

On Tuesday 17th September 2024, Melons Australia and other Fruit and Vegetable associations hosted the final Roadshow of the year. The event saw over 60 attendees, who had the chance to observe firsthand how disease management practices can impact crop growth. The field trial walk provided a valuable opportunity for growers, agronomists, and industry experts to engage with the Agreco Australia team about their ongoing trials in melon disease management, including gummy stem.

After the field walk, we held a series of presentations covering key challenges facing our industry, such as pest and disease management, biosecurity, quality management, labour, and sustainability.

In the coming weeks, we will share the findings from the field trials and the Roadshow presentations on the Melons Australia website. Stay updated by following us on social media.

Melon Quality Project Update

Along with continuing to monitor fruit maturity against the new standards, the project team has also started testing the impacts of transportation on melon condition. This will ensure that consumers like the condition of the fruit as well as the taste.

Project Manager, Mark Loeffen, spent several days in the Northern Territory this month using a simulated melon to monitor the impact of on-farm transport and handling on several varieties of melons. The data collected will help the project team understand the accelerations on fruit during the journey from the harvesting paddock to the packhouse. Research is also underway to monitor the effects of transportation between the packhouse and the DC.

The project team is currently researching information from other people’s research and will also conduct their own. They will use the research findings to develop guidelines about the maximum safe accelerations to help protect fruit during transport.

Now Is the Perfect Timing to Upskill!

Now that we’re coming towards the end of the calendar year this is the perfect time to look at upskilling through the Melon Training and Leadership Program ready to hit 2025 with a bang!

One of the offerings included in the program is the “The Foundations of Directorship program” run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors. This course is suitable for new and aspiring directors, senior executives and managers and encompasses the essential duties and responsibilities of directors in three one-day courses.

Luca D’Arsie (Melons Australia Board member) recently graduated from the program. Below is some of his feedback:

“The course helped me gain a clearer understanding of my role as a director. A key takeaway was identifying the right questions to ask in my position, and also knowing what questions to expect from the board when presenting to them. Additionally, the deeper insight into financial reports was incredibly valuable”

“I highly recommend this course to anyone currently serving on a board or considering joining one. It offers a fresh perspective and a deeper level of understanding, distinct from the managerial experience many board members come from. To enhance industry performance, it's essential that all board members participate in courses like this.”

If you are interested in this course or others within the program (click here for more information), please contact Jo Embry biosecurity@melonsaustralia.org.au.

Information for Melon Exporters

The Federal Government is reviewing the “Accredited properties regulatory framework,” which accredits properties like farms and packhouses under the Export Control Act 2020 and related rules. This accreditation is required by importing countries that mandate specific procedures for exports, such as melons to New Zealand. The review aims to improve the system by simplifying policies, reducing administrative burdens, enhancing compliance, and clarifying export requirements. Melons Australia will make a submission on behalf of the industry and seeks input on what works well in the current process and areas for improvement.

Please send your feedback on the below questions to biosecurity@melonsaustralia.org.au:
  • What aspects of the current accredited property accreditation process are working well, and where do you see opportunities for improvement?
  • How can the policies and procedures be streamlined to better support stakeholders?
  • In what ways can we further clarify export regulatory requirements to better assist you?
  • How can we make the administrative process easier and more efficient for accredited property farms, crop monitors, and packhouses?

Alternatively, individuals can make their own submissions via the government website: 2024-56: Horticulture – Review of the Accredited Properties Regulatory Framework - DAFF (agriculture.gov.au)

APVMA Proposed Plans for the use of Paraquat and Diquat

The APVMA has proposed (in their recent preliminary review) removing the broad claims that allow the use of paraquat and diquat in "Row crops, Vegetables, and Market Gardens." This decision stems from the APVMA's identification of unacceptable environmental risks associated with the use of these chemicals, either individually or in combination, particularly concerning their impact on wild mammals and birds.

As a result, access to paraquat and paraquat/diquat formulations will be lost for all vegetables and row crops, including melons classified as cucurbits. However, for diquat, some vegetables and row crops (excluding cucurbits/melons) will still have access.

For more information on the proposal, please refer to the summary of assessment outcomes in the proposed regulatory decisions on the APVMA website.

We need your input and assistance!

Melons Australia is collaborating with other Peak Industry Bodies to assess the potential usage and impact on melon growers if this decision is implemented.

We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the following questions, please email to biosecurity@melonsaustralia.org.au
  1. Do you currently use paraquat and/or diquat, including in combination? (please specify what)
  2. If yes, for what purpose are you using it, what rates are you using, at whatstages of the crop cycle are you using it and what are your currentapplication methods?
  3. How would losing access to these chemicals affect your melon production and crop management? What are your alternatives, are they as affective and what is the cost implication? (Please be as specific as possible)
  4. Do you have any other details or comments that could help us prepare a response to this consultation process?

Click here for summary of assessment outcomes.

Varroa - What Does it Mean for Pollination in Australia

Honey bees are critical pollinators in agricultural systems in Australia. How will Varroa destructor (varroa) affect pollination in Australia, and what can we do to help bees, beekeepers and growers overcome the challenge? For some of these answers please click here for to access a fact sheet recently produced by Agrifutures.

Varroa Development Officers

Varroa Development Officers have been engaged (as part of the Varroa Transition to Management Plan) in all states and territories of Australia to engage with commercial and recreational beekeepers to extend best management practice guidelines and resolve problems. They are also tasked with establishing, coordinating and maintaining a voluntary Varroa mite monitoring program in collaboration with volunteer beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and societies.
