Melons Australia's CEO Update

It is our privilege to bring you this November edition of Melon E-News and it is hard to believe the end of 2024 is so close.

There are two updates from the Melons Australia Board to inform you of. The first of these is to acknowledge the appointment of Dan Harris to the Board, Dan is a watermelon grower from Finley, NSW, who was welcomed onto the Melons Australia Board to fill a vacancy in November 2024.

We also provide our sincerest thanks to Terry O’Leary, who, after many years on the Melons Australia Board including serving for the last 4 years as Treasurer/Secretary while also fulfilling the role of Executive Officer for a period, has resigned from the Board.

Terry’s insight, guidance and support has been instrumental in bringing Melons Australia to the successful position we are currently in. We wish Terry all the best, and no doubt will see him around the traps.

It was brilliant to celebrate the National Agriculture Day #AgDayAU as part of a national movement to support and show our appreciation for all of our growers! Excellent leadership and coordination by the National Farmers Federation on this important recognition initiative.

Over recent weeks our team have been busy on a number of key priorities, including:
  • Preparing our industry submission to the Japan melon import risk assessment public comment process.
  • Engaging in a suite of biosecurity meetings.
  • Progressing important discussions towards the implementation of our new maturity standards, developed by the Melon Quality Improvement project.
  • Continuing our engagement with overseas counterparts and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Damodar Mall – CEO of Reliance retail in India.

Just to name a few!

We also continue our preparation for the Chinchilla Melon Festival, 13-16 February 2025! This will be an exciting start to what presents as an action packed 2025, including our European Study Tour (email me to flag your interest ASAP), our 30th Anniversary operating as the Peak Industry Body for the amazing Australian melon industry and many more engagement opportunities – stay tuned!

Please reach out to me or the team if there are any questions, concerns or issues you need support with – we're here as an industry representative body to help! You can contact me by email HERE or call me at +61 407 032 023.

Melon Quality Project Update

Rockmelon Minimum Maturity Standards Adjusted

The minimum maturity standards that were set in 2023 have been changed from the previous 50% greater than 11° brix to 80% greater than 10° Brix.

Scientific modelling has shown that the new standards will ensure that more rockmelons will be liked by consumers with this minor change. This in turn will improve consumer confidence and encourage them to purchase and consume more rockmelons.

The new standards were requested by the industry and supported by supermarkets and the Melons Australia board.

The project team will be sending melon inspection reports to growers from November until the end of the project in March 2027. These reports will be sent to growers, via Melons Australia, whenever thegrower source is identifiable when wholesale and retail inspections are done. The reports are designed to identify where improvements can be made and to provide feedback for growers.

Project manager, Mark Loeffen, will work with growers to provide assessment tools and strategies to support the industry meeting the new maturity standards.

Growers wanting to discuss their inspection reports of learn more about the project are invited to contact the project manager: mark.loeffen@delytics.com

Heading towards the festive season, what better Christmas present to give yourselves than an investment in your professional and personal development! With significant financial support from the Hort Innovation Melon Levy fund, the Melon Training and Leadership program provides the mechanism for you to do just that!

Recent graduates of the program include Luca D’Arsie from Select Melons Australia, who completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Foundations of Directorship Program; Eilis Walker from Nutrien Ag in Ayr, who completed the Marcus Oldham Leadership Program; Dean Calderone from Mt Alma Organics, who completed the Moshie Lean Leaders Program; and Gabriele Bochicchio from Rombola Family Farms, also completing the Moshie Lean Leaders Program.

A couple of quotes from these guys include:

“The best piece of advice would be to take that jump and really lean into it.” Eilis Walker

“The time you don't do the course, and you spend in your role and don't do your role to your full capability is time you lose. If you do the course a year earlier, you get a extra year of benefit.” Luca D’Arsie

“Don’t be hesitant because the amount you gain is amazing. It's a starting point so whatever course helps you to learn more, you have to embrace it.” Gabriel Bochiccio

Melons from Japan - Have your say!

A draft report for the risk analysis for fresh melon fruit for human consumption from Japan was released by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) on 17th October 2024. DAFF initiated this risk analysis because Japan requested market access for fresh melons (Cucumis melo). The request covers all melon varieties except oriental melon (C. melo var. makuwa) and oriental pickling melon (C. melo var. utilissimus, syn. C. melo var. conomon).

The draft report proposes that the importation of commercially produced melon fruit (except oriental melon and oriental pickling melon) to Australia from all commercial production areas of Japan can be permitted, subject to a range of biosecurity requirements.

A public consultation period is now open and will close on 16 December 2024. You are invited you to have your say on the draft report. Alternatively, Melons Australia will be making a submission on behalf of industry and would greatly value your feedback – please send your feedback to ceo@melonsaustralia.org.au specifically with regards to:
  • identified pests
  • proposedrisk management measures
  • any other technical aspects of the report.

The expected release date for the final report is mid 2025, following consideration of stakeholder comments on the draft report.
