Melons Australia embarks on Californian study tour

A delegation of 10 industry participants from across the supply chain is setting off on an exciting journey to California's renowned melon-growing regions. This diverse group, composed of professionals from various sectors within the industry, will spend 10 days in the state, departing from Australia between the 8th and 10th of August.

The purpose of the study tour is to learn, engage, and forge lasting relationships within the group and with their overseas counterparts. The tour is being spearheaded by Johnathon Davey, Melons Australia's CEO, who will guide the group through a series of insightful visits with supply chain partners and others in the Davis and Woodland regions. These visits are strategically designed to explore new products, cutting-edge practices and future innovations that can be adapted and implemented back home in Australia.

In addition to these site visits, the group has an array of strategic meetings lined up with industry leaders, research partners, and innovators. The goal is to bring the latest insights and technologies back to the Australian melon-growing sector, driving the industry forward and ensuring it remains at the forefront of global developments.

One of the key focuses of the tour is the industry's commitment to reducing food waste by half by 2030. With this ambitious goal in mind, the group will be on the lookout for opportunities to identify products for repurposing, creating new consumer offerings, and developing value-added products that can reduce waste and add value to the supply chain.

As the tour progresses, Melons Australia's will be sharing regular updates and insights on their social media channels. The study tour is being delivered through funding by Hort Innovation using melon research and development levy funds and funds from the Australian Government.
